JUG BAND MUSIC

THE LOVIN’ SPOONFUL

Today’s musical choice was inspired by Jill of Filosofa’s Word. Normally I would have just played this song in her comments, and let it go at that. But it has been so long that I posted anything here I have been looking for something to write about. This is it.

This song makes me happy. It makes me want to click my heels and dance (things my old body won’t let me do anymore, but I do it now inside my mind!). It puts a smile on my face so wide even thinking about Donald Trump or Danielle Smith cannot erase it (though they come close!).

The song means absolutely nothing! It isn’t even real jug band music, it only talks about jug band music. But yet it does something for me few other songs can do, it peps me up no matter how far down the rabbit hole I am.

The lyrics can be found by hitting the little down arrow at the right side just under the video. They are almost total nonsense, but that is their joy. And when the singer sings: And everybody knows that the very last line is “And the doctor said give him jug band music, it seems to make him feel just fine” you know exactly what you are about to hear…

Just in case you want to hear what real jug band music can sound like, here is a link to 120 different examples of it, as collected by Steven White,

Song number 118 on the list goes like this:

A man with a lot of strange experiences in my life. Haven't traveled that much per se, but have lived in a lot of different areas. English is the only language I have mastered, and the older I get, the more of it I lose. Seniorhood gives me more time to self-reflect, but since time seems to go much faster, it feels like I don't have as much time for living as my younger selves did. I believe in spiritual atheism and responsible anarchy. These do not have to be oxymorons. Imagination is an incredible tool. I can imagine a lot of things.

I loved this one back in the day – I had a ‘best of’ album and this was one of the tracks. Thanks also for the introduction to earlier jugband music. Jugs have been part of English folk music for quite a while too. One of my favourites is Spiral Staircase, by Ralph McTell. Played live with his band it was hilarious.

Im loving Dusting the frets. Music is medicine. I have a gramophone and wanted to collect some old records with good music like that. All I’ve been able to find is classics and I’m not keen on listening to them. If I could get my hands on some Jug or old blues I’d be very happy.

Thry are out there, but I think most belong to collectors. They tend to stay collected. My goto music site is YouTube, and there are more things on there than can be easily found. The trick is in asking the right questions. Oh how I wish I knew the right questions!
